About Carefree, AZ
Carefree is located 36 miles northeast of downtown Phoenix and is bordered by the Tonto National Forest to the north and east. What began as an old western mining camp with the discovery of gold in 1874, today Carefree remains true to its heritage through the rustic antique shops and old cowboy restaurants that line the downtown main street. While visiting Carefree you will experience the native Arizona landscape and get a taste of the wild-wild west.
Carefree is primarily a residential and resort community. It is one of the earliest planned communities in Arizona. Its exclusive, custom homes and small horse ranches are built on multiple acres to preserve the surrounding, natural desert environment. Large, picturesque boulders in its higher, cooler elevation near the Tonto National Forest make it an attractive area for a scenic drive. Community foundations funded by its affluent residents have nurtured a growing arts community.

History of Carefree
The Golf courses in Carefree are reminiscent of how the town first began in the 1950’s. Carefree was developed by Tom Darlington and K.T. Palmer. They envisioned a planned community within the spectacular boulder formations, mountain views, and Sonoran Desert beauty.
Carefree was one of the earliest planned communities in Arizona. It wasn’t until 1984 that the town of Carefree was incorporated. Carefree has strict residential and commercial building policies that help maintain the peaceful and tranquil ambiance that the community was founded on.
